Overview

Reporting to the Senior Specialist, Arctic Species and Ecosystems, the Associate Specialist will support the Resilient Habitats team by providing technical and research input to WWF-Canada’s work with northern partners. The Associate Specialist will work closely with a Hunters and Trappers Association in Nunavut in the planning and implementation of a Guardians program, with a particular emphasis on helping to navigate interactions with governments on species-at-risk monitoring and associated actions. The incumbent will give priority to supporting the implementation of Inuit knowledge in the region and stay up to date on information to support WWF-Canada’s conservation work in the region, such as primary peer-reviewed literature from a variety of fields of study, research reports, meeting transcripts and public registries as well as northern media articles.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of Inuit knowledge through collaboration on a Guardians program the East Kitikmeot region of Nunavut.
  • Seek out, review, summarize and share, as requested from Inuit collaborators, relevant analysis and research-based reports related to Arctic conservation, including but not limited to Species at Risk Recovery Strategies, Protected Areas, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, Guardians programming and the Blue Economy.
  • Review best practices for Indigenous Guardians programming and generate materials to support ongoing Guardians initiatves in the North.
  • Assist in funding applications related to implementation of conservation actions by both WWF-Canada and its partners and assist with the associated reporting.
  • Identify key conservation issues and opportunities for WWF-Canada engagement in Nunavut and more widely across the Canadian Arctic and sub-Arctic region.

Qualifications

  • A degree in in zoology, biology, ecology, or similar field plus 1-2 years relevant work experience, OR
    4-5 years relevant northern work experience.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities in the Canadian Arctic.
  • Ability to speak Inuktitut an asset.
  • Strong research and analysis skills.
  • Strong technical writing ability.
  • Project coordination/management experience.
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multi-person teams.
  • Strong written and email communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.

Other Information

  • 1 year contract position
  • Ideally this position would be based in the Arctic. The individual may be required to travel to Taloyoak, Nunavut, and other regions within Canada if needed.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required to attend meetings and/or events.
