Calling All Oyster Lovers: Montreal’s Oysterfest Supports Marine Sustainability… and Good Times

By Carolyn Pinto – Director of Communications, Open Pier Foundation
How can slurping oysters help save the planet? When the Open Pier Foundation chooses WWF Canada as the primary beneficiary of proceeds from Montreal’s 5th Annual Oysterfest! That’s right – each guest at Montreal’s favourite culinary event is directly contributing to the WWF’s amazing sustainable seafood and freshwater quality improvement programs. We couldn’t be more proud.

Shuckers compete in a fast and furious oyster shuck-off at the 2012 Montreal Oysterfest. This year’s event runs from 1pm – 9pm on 8 September at Terrasses Bonsecours, Montreal.

Oysterfest started small. Back in 2009, oyster shucker and sustainable seafood importer Daniel Notkin gathered 200 bon vivants in an abandoned lot in Old Montreal to celebrate what he lovingly calls “the most beautiful of bivalves”. Daniel’s passion for oysters turned out to be infectious – Oysterfest has since grown from a humble but raucous get-together into an all-out bash that Montrealers in the know look forward to all summer. Beyond oysters, Oysterfest features beautiful food and plentiful beverages from local restaurants and bars, the Mott’s Clamato Caesar throwdown, and of course, the always-entertaining shucking competition, which attracts colourful competitors from far and wide. The exuberant energy at Oysterfest is hard to describe!
Montrealers are serious about food. Like the rest of the world, we want to know that what we eat comes from sustainable sources. Events like Oysterfest allow us to spread the message that protecting our ecosystems is crucial to maintaining a healthy food supply. There is a lot of work to be done. That’s why the Open Pier Foundation is thrilled to be working this year with WWF Canada, one of the world’s best-known environmental organizations, to support specific and established programs that align with those values. For Montreal Oysterfesters, it’s a win-win situation.
See you at Oysterfest!
