WWF at the Toronto Green Living Show

Some of us may pretend we’re by the ocean as we sit on the beaches of Lake Ontario in the summer, but sometimes it’s hard to relate to the issues our oceans are facing when they’re actually so far away. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Royal Ontario Museum to develop a Green Living Show exhibit entitled ‘Canada’s Oceans and You’. The 800 square foot display is interactive and will provide visitors with the opportunity to explore all three of Canada’s oceans – the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic.

The theme of the exhibit is how sustainable fishing practices are crucial to the survival of marine ecosystems and our way of life. ‘Sustainable seafood’ refers to farmed or wild fish and shellfish products that are harvested in a way that doesn’t jeopardize stocks for future generations, and has minimal impact to the ecosystem they came from.

If you read a blog I wrote a few months ago, you know that most Canadians want their seafood to be sustainably sourced, but don’t feel they have enough information to make that choice when they’re shopping.  That’s where the business sector and retailers in particular can help.  They can work to provide Canadians with sustainable seafood choices.  One retailer who is doing just that is Loblaw.  We’ve been working with them for three years to help ensure that 100% of the seafood products on their shelves will be sustainably sourced by the end of 2013. As Canada’s largest food retailer, Loblaw has developed one of the most aggressive sustainable seafood commitments in the world, driving large scale change by influencing vendors, suppliers, and other industry players in transitioning to sustainable fishing practices.  They are making it easier for consumers to make the right choice when purchasing seafood, and helping to educate the public about the sustainable seafood movement.
So if you’re curious about our oceans and want to learn more about the choices you can make to keep them healthy, come out to the Green Living Show from April 13th to the 15th at Exhibition Place. Free tickets are available on our website. It’ll be a fun and educational experience for the whole family – and you can chat with WWF experts when you’re there!
