In 2007 Earth Hour was such a huge success in Sydney, Australia, that WWF decided to make it a global event!
In 2008, millions of people, in hundreds of cities, in more than 30 countries switched off their lights for Earth Hour. Iconic buildings around the globe participated including the Sydney Opera House, Bangkok’s Wat Arun Buddhist temple, Rome’s Coliseum, Stockholm’s Royal Castle, London’s City Hall, New York’s Empire State Building and the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver.
Canada shone above the rest with almost half the population participating. About 10 million people in more than 150 cities from coast-to-coast switched off their lights. People in cities across Canada held candlelight dinners, enjoyed time with friends and family or went on walks. Some made an even bigger contribution by turning off or unplugging other electrical devices.
